Second Work and Holiday Visa (Subclass 462): Complete Guide 2026

If your first 12 months in Australia on First Work and Holiday Visa (Subclass 462) have flown by and you are not ready to go home, you can apply to extend your stay for another year with the Second Work and Holiday Visa (Subclass 462).

To secure your Second Work and Holiday Visa (Subclass 462), the Department of Home Affairs has a strict set of criteria you must meet.

Eligibility Requirements for the Second 462 Visa

To be eligible to apply for your Second Work and Holiday Visa (Subclass 462), you must satisfy all of the following requirements:

Visa History

You must currently hold, or have previously held, a First Work and Holiday (Subclass 462) visa.

Age Limit

You must be 18 to 30 years old (inclusive) at the time you lodge your application.

Passport

You must hold a valid passport from an eligible Work and Holiday participant country.

Specified Work

You must have successfully completed a minimum of 3 months (88 calendar days) of “specified subclass 462 work” while holding your first 462 visa.

Financial Capacity

You must demonstrate that you have enough funds to support yourself during your stay (usually around AUD $5,000).

Location

You can apply onshore (from within Australia) or offshore (from outside Australia). If applying onshore, you must hold a substantive visa or your last substantive visa must have expired less than 28 days ago.

No Dependents

You must not be accompanied by any dependent children.

Health and Character

You must continue to meet Australia’s strict health and character requirements.

Work Documents Requirements

When you apply for your second visa, the government will ask for strict proof that you actually completed your 88 days. The absolute best way to prove this is through your paperwork.

You must collect and save:

  • All of your payslips.
  • Your bank statements showing the wages being deposited into your account.
  • Your PAYG payment summaries (tax records).
  • A piece-rate agreement (if you are being paid based on how much fruit you pick, rather than an hourly rate).

Never accept “cash-in-hand” jobs. If you cannot provide legal payslips showing tax has been paid, the work will not count, and your second visa application will be refused.

How and When to Apply

You can apply for your Second Work and Holiday visa either onshore (inside Australia) or offshore (outside Australia).

  • Applying Onshore: If you apply while still in Australia on your first 462 visa, you will generally be granted a Bridging Visa. This allows you to stay in the country legally while your second visa is being processed.
  • Applying Offshore: If your first visa has expired and you have returned home, you can still apply for your second visa later, as long as you completed the 88 days during your first visa and are still under the age limit.

Visa Validity and Start Dates

Exactly when your 12-month visa period begins depends on where you are located and what visa you hold when your application is approved:

  • If you are outside Australia (Offshore) at the time of grant: You will be given 12 months from the date your visa is granted to travel to Australia. Your official 12-month stay period will activate on the exact date you first enter the country.
  • If you are inside Australia (Onshore) and hold an active Subclass 462 visa: Your new visa will seamlessly extend your current stay, permitting you to remain in Australia for exactly 12 months from the date your old 462 visa was scheduled to expire.
  • If you are inside Australia (Onshore) but do NOT hold an active Subclass 462 visa: Your new visa will activate immediately, allowing you to remain in Australia for exactly 12 months from the date the new visa is granted.
