The Job Ready Program (JRP) – Complete Guide for International Graduates (updated 2025)

Job Ready Program

Introduction

If you’re an international graduate looking to build your career in Australia and apply for skilled migration pathways, the Job Ready Program (JRP) is one of the most important steps in your journey.
This program is designed by Trades Recognition Australia (TRA) to assess whether your qualifications and workplace skills meet Australian industry standards before applying for permanent or skilled visas.

In this detailed guide, we break down what the JRP is, who it is for, how each step works, fees, documents required, eligibility, and more — in simple and clear language.

What is the Job Ready Program (JRP)?

The Job Ready Program is a structured skills assessment pathway for international graduates who completed an Australian trade qualification. It evaluates whether your training and real-world work experience meet the competency levels required for skilled employment in Australia.

The JRP determines if you are “Job Ready” for your nominated occupation and can be used for skilled visa subclasses (e.g., 189, 190, 491, 186).

Program Objective

The main purpose of the JRP is to ensure that you:

✔ Hold a relevant Australian qualification
✔ Can perform at Australian workplace standards
✔ Have adequate supervised work experience
✔ Meet eligibility for skilled migration assessments

The program compares your practical skills, knowledge, and job performance with what is expected of a qualified tradesperson in Australia.

Who Can Apply for the JRP?

You may be eligible if you:

  • Completed a relevant trade qualification in Australia (Certificate III/IV or Diploma)
  • Hold a successful PSA or JRPRE outcome
  • Have a valid visa allowing you to work (often 485 visa)
  • Have a current passport
  • Aren’t in a licensed occupation (Electrician, Plumber, A/C & Refrigeration Mechanic are excluded)

JRP Steps (3 Stages)

The Job Ready Program consists of three mandatory steps, completed in order:

1️⃣ Job Ready Employment (JRE)

You begin working in your nominated occupation with TRA-approved employment.

2️⃣ Job Ready Workplace Assessment (JRWA)

A TRA-approved assessor visits your workplace to test your practical skills.

3️⃣ Job Ready Final Assessment (JRFA)

Final verification of all skills, employment duration, and workplace competency.
A successful JRFA is required for skilled visa applications.

Important Note

You MUST have a Provisional Skills Assessment (PSA) or JRPRE completed within the last 3 years before applying for JRE.

Ineligible Occupations

Some licensed trades are not eligible for the JRP:

  • Electrician (General / Special Class)
  • Plumber (General)
  • Air-conditioning & Refrigeration Mechanic

How to Apply for the Job Ready Program

You apply through the TRA Online Portal using the username and password created during your PSA/JRPRE application.

Each login uses multi-factor authentication, and a one-time passcode will be emailed to you.

For each stage of the JRP, you must:

  1. Log into the TRA Online Portal
  2. Select Job Ready Program
  3. Complete the online form

Your JRE start date is the date you submit your JRE application — unless varied by TRA due to:

  • Prior employment claim approval
  • Late submission of full documents

Claiming Prior Employment

You may claim up to 3 months of employment before your JRE application IF:

  • It was with your first registered employer
  • It was in your nominated occupation
  • It was ongoing on your JRE application date

  • It meets TRA approval
