DAMA Concessions, DAMA vs Standard Visa, Current DAMA Lists – Complete Guide 2026

A DAMA is a formal, two-tier agreement between the Australian Government and a regional authority (such as a state government or shire). Unlike standard skilled migration, these agreements are tailored to the specific economic needs of a region, offering access to occupations and concessions that are otherwise unavailable.

Key Concessions

Depending on the specific region, the following concessions may apply:

  • Higher Age Limits: Permanent residence pathways are often open to applicants up to 55 years of age (standard is usually 45).
  • English Language Reductions: Many regions accept lower English test scores for select occupations.
  • Experience Waivers: Reduced work experience requirements (e.g., 2 years rather than the standard 3 years for subclass 186 and subclass 494).
  • Salary Concessions: A reduction in the Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold (TSMIT) is available for some roles, provided market rates are met.

Expanded Occupation Lists

Designated Area Migration Programs provide access to a vast range of occupations not found on the standard skilled migration lists. This includes semi-skilled roles (ANZSCO Skill Levels 4, and 5) and specialized non-ANZSCO positions, such as:

  • Waiter
  • Aged Care & Disability Workers
  • Delivery Driver
  • Agricultural & Farm Workers
  • Barista
  • Truck Driver
  • Personal Care Assistant
  • Taxi Driver
  • Delivery Driver
  • Security Officer
  • Receptionist
  • Tyre Fitter
  • Commercial Cleaner
  • Domestic Cleaner

Eligible Visas

Businesses with a DAMA Labour Agreement can sponsor workers across three primary visa subclasses:

  1. Subclass 482 (Skills in Demand): A temporary visa allowing workers to stay for up to 4 years.
  2. Subclass 494 (Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional (Provisional)): A provisional visa valid for 5 years, leading to PR.
  3. Subclass 186 (Employer Nomination Scheme): A permanent residency visa.

Important Update: Most Designated Area Migration Agreements now offer a structured pathway to Permanent Residency (PR). For example, many regions allow 482 visa holders to transition to a 186 permanent visa after just 2 years of employment.

Current DAMA List

There are currently 13 active DAMAs across Australia. Each is managed by a Designated Area Representative (DAR) responsible for endorsing employers.

How to Apply: A Guide for Employers

Employers cannot apply directly to Home Affairs without first securing regional backing. They need to follow this step-by-step process:

  1. Check Eligibility: Ensure your business is operating within a designated DAMA region and is financially viable.
  2. Labour Market Testing: You must demonstrate a genuine attempt to recruit Australian citizens or permanent residents first.
  3. Apply for Endorsement: Submit an application to the relevant Designated Area Representative (DAR). (Links provided in the table above).
  4. Request a Labour Agreement: Once endorsed, lodge a request for a Labour Agreement.
  5. Nominate the Worker: After the Labour Agreement is signed by the Government, you can nominate the skilled worker for the relevant visa (482, 494, or 186).

Note on Industry Labour Agreements: If your industry is already covered by a specific Industry Labour Agreement (e.g., Dairy, Fishing, Meat, Minister of Religion), you generally cannot use a DAMA for those specific occupations.

FAQ’s

Can I change employers after my DAMA visa is approved?

Yes, but with restrictions. Because your visa is tied to a specific labour agreement, you cannot simply move to any employer. You must find another employer within a designated region who is also an approved DAMA sponsor and is willing to nominate you under the agreement framework. Once the nomination will be approved, you can start work with new employer.

Can International Graduates apply for DAMA visa?

Yes, international graduates can apply, provided they meet the specific skills and experience requirements of the DAMA agreement. Crucially, you must secure a job offer from an endorsement-approved employer within the designated DAMA region to be eligible.

Can I include my family members in the application?

Yes. You can include immediate family members (such as your spouse/partner and dependent children) as secondary applicants in your visa application. They will generally have the same work and study rights as the primary applicant

Can I apply directly for the Subclass 186 (Permanent Residence) under DAMA?

Generally, no. Most DAMA pathways are structured as a transition. You are usually required to hold a Subclass 482 (Skills in Demand) visa and work for your sponsoring employer in the designated region for a set period (typically 2 years) before you are eligible to transition to the permanent Subclass 186 visa.
