482 Skill Assessment Exemptions

Even if you are on the list above, you might be exempt. If you meet any of the following four criteria, you may not need a skills assessment.

1. Australian or “Low Risk” Qualifications: You hold a relevant qualification for your occupation that was obtained in Australia. Alternatively, you hold a qualification from a country that is not listed next to your occupation in the table above.

2. Licensing & Registration: Your occupation requires a license or registration to work in Australia (e.g., Electrician, Plumber), and you have already obtained that Australian license.

3. Previous TRA Assessment: You have already met the standards set by Trades Recognition Australia (TRA) under the Offshore Skills Assessment Program (OSAP) for your nominated occupation.

4. High Income & Accredited Sponsor: You are being nominated by an Accredited Sponsor AND your annual earnings will be at least AUD 180,000.

FAQs

Does a 482 visa need skill assessment?

Not all Subclass 482 applicants require a skills assessment. However, if your occupation and passport country appear on the mandatory list, you must provide one unless you are an exempt applicant.

Can I use a 485 visa skills assessment for a 482 visa?

Generally, yes, as long as the assessment is full assessment (not provisional), matches the correct occupation, and was issued within the last three years.

Do Program or Project Administrators always need a skill assessment for 482 visa?

Yes, unlike most other occupations, Program or Project Administrators generally require a skills assessment regardless of their passport country, unless one of the specific exemptions applies (such as earning over $180k with an accredited sponsor)

What happens if I apply without a skills assessment when one was required?

Your visa application will likely be refused. The skills assessment usually needs to be completed (or at least commenced, depending on the specific stream) before the visa is lodged.
