The Mobility Arrangement for Talented Early-professionals Scheme (MATES visa) is a new pathway that allows eligible Indian graduates and early-career professionals to live and work in Australia for up to 2 years.

This program is part of Australia–India Mobility Partnership, helping Indian professionals gain real-world experience in high-growth industries.

Only 3,000 places per year are available, and applicants must first register for a ballot before applying for the visa.


What Is the MATES Visa?

The MATES visa sits under the Temporary Work (International Relations) Visa (Subclass 403).
It allows skilled Indian nationals to come to Australia without employer sponsorship, making it one of the easiest temporary work visas for young professionals.

If selected in the ballot, you can:

  • Live and work in Australia for up to 2 years
  • Bring eligible family members
  • Gain experience in top Australian industries
  • Work in your field of qualification or any other field

Who Can Apply for the MATES Visa? (Eligibility Requirements)

To apply for the MATES visa, you must first register in the ballot and be randomly selected.

Ballot Eligibility (Before Applying for the Visa)

You must:


✔ Hold a valid Indian passport
✔ Hold a PAN Card (India)
✔ Be 18 to 30 years old (inclusive) when the ballot opens
✔ Not previously participated in the MATES program
✔ Have a valid email address
✔ Agree to all declarations
✔ Pay the AUD 25 ballot fee
✔ Not already be registered in another ballot round


Qualification Requirements for the MATES Visa

You must have:

✔ Graduated on or after 1 November 2023
✔ A Bachelor degree or higher
✔ From a Top 100 institution in India (NIRF Overall 2024 list)
✔ In one of the eligible sectors:

  • Renewable Energy
  • Mining
  • Engineering
  • Information and Communications Technology (ICT)
  • Artificial Intelligence (AI)
  • Financial Technology (FinTech)
  • Agricultural Technology (AgriTech)

👉 Affiliated colleges not in NIRF Top 100 do not qualify.


English Language Requirement

You must show proficient English, such as:

  • IELTS overall 6.0
  • Minimum 5.0 per component

Equivalent tests (PTE, TOEFL etc.) are also accepted.


Other Requirements

You must also:

✔ Show enough financial capacity to support your stay
✔ Have adequate health insurance
✔ Meet health and character checks


MATES Ballot Dates (2025–2026 Program Year)

The ballot opens:

1 November 2025 — 14 December 2025

You can submit only one ballot entry per year.


What Happens After You Are Selected?

If you are selected through the ballot:

  1. You will receive a Notification of Selection Letter
  2. You will be invited to apply for the Subclass 403 MATES Stream Visa
  3. You must apply from outside Australia
  4. You can include eligible family members in your visa application

Can Family Members Apply?

Yes.
Family members can:

  • Register separately in the ballot, OR
  • Be included later in your visa application if you are selected.

Family members do not count towards the 3,000 cap.
