Functional English Requirements 2026: PTE 24, IELTS 4.5 & Exemptions

To meet the Functional English standard for your visa, you must provide evidence in one of the following ways:

Exemption 1: Passport Holders (from USA, UK, NZ, Canada, Ireland)

You are exempted from the English requirement if you are a citizen and hold a valid passport from one of these countries:

  • Canada
  • New Zealand
  • Republic of Ireland
  • United Kingdom (not including British National Overseas passports)
  • United States of America

Exemption 2: Study Completed in English

You may also meet the requirements of if you completed study or training in English, such as:

  • At least 2 years of full-time study (degree, diploma, higher degree, or trade certificate) where all instruction was in English
  • Primary and secondary education: all years of primary plus at least 3 years of secondary school, taught in English
  • Secondary education only: at least 5 years, taught in English
  • Study in Australia: at least 1 year full-time (or equivalent part-time) towards a diploma, degree, or higher qualification, with all study in English

Functional English Test score – Test Taken on or before 6 August 2025

Note: Test results from a test taken on or before 6 August 2025, may be used as evidence of English proficiency for visa purposes until 6 August 2026, inclusive. This will depend on the visa.​

Online Test Restrictions

The Department does not accept results from online or at-home tests (remote-proctored). Examples not accepted:

  • IELTS Online
  • CELPIP Online
  • LanguageCert Academic Online
  • MET Digital (home version)
  • OET@Home
  • TOEFL iBT Home Edition

What is the Functional English PTE score required in 2026?

You now need an Overall PTE score of 24. This applies to all PTE Academic tests taken on or after 7 August 2025. This is a reduction from the previous PTE score of 30.

What is the score for IELTS Functional English?

You need an Average Band Score of 4.5. You can take either the IELTS General or Academic test to provide this evidence of Functional English.

How long is a Functional English test valid for?

Your English test results (PTE, IELTS or other tests) are valid for 12 months (1 year) to meet the Functional English requirement for Australian visas.

Can I use old test results from before 7 August 2025?

Yes. If you sat your test before 7 August 2025, you can still use those results (with the old score rules) until 6 August 2026 to prove English requirement.

Can I use PTE Online for Functional English?

No, usually Home Affairs does not accept online (at-home) tests for migration. You must take the test at a secure centre.
