Subclass 482 English Test Update

Starting 13 September 2025, the Department of Home Affairs has announced a Subclass 482 English Test Update, changing the approved English language tests and score requirements for the Subclass 482 (Temporary Skill Shortage) visa.

The new rules make the process clearer and more flexible for visa applicants.

What’s New in Subclass 482 English Test Update

The 2025 update introduces new test providers and refinements to existing test references.
The following additional English test providers are now approved:

  • Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program General (CELPIP General)
  • LanguageCert Academic Test (LANGUAGECERT Academic)
  • Michigan English Test (MET)

Other important updates include:

  • The instrument now clearly specifies IELTS General Training and IELTS Academic.
  • The Cambridge English Advanced test (CAE) is now referred to as Cambridge Advanced Test (C1 Advanced).

When the Changes Apply

  • The new changes starts on 13 September 2025.
  • It applies to Subclass 482 visa applications lodged on or after this date.
  • Transitional arrangements apply for applicants who completed their English test before 13 September 2025.

Single Attempt vs Re-sitting Test Components

Previously, applicants had to achieve all scores in a single test sitting.

Under the new rules:

  • Applicants can now re-sit individual components of a test if needed.
  • This means IELTS One Skill Retake (OSR) and MET SSR are now accepted for tests conducted on or after 13 September 2025.

However:

  • If your English test was taken before 13 September 2025, you must still meet the required scores in a single attempt (no re-sits allowed).

Validity of English Tests

Your English test result remains valid for 3 years from the original test date.
If you re-sit one or more components, the 3-year validity is still counted from the first test sitting.
