Eligibility

Truck Driver DAMA Australia Skill Requirements

Truck Driver (General) is generally classified as ANZSCO Skill Level 4.

The indicative skill level in Australia is ordinarily comparable to:

  • an AQF Certificate II; or
  • an AQF Certificate III.

At least one year of relevant work experience may substitute for the formal qualification under the ANZSCO skill-level framework.

Skills Assessment

A truck driver applying through a DAMA may be required to obtain a suitable skills assessment from the assessing authority specified in the relevant labour agreement.

For many Truck Driver (General) DAMA pathways, the relevant assessing authority is VETASSESS.

Work Experience Requirements

The required work experience depends on the relevant DAMA and visa pathway.

Under several published DAMA arrangements, a Truck Driver (General) applicant may need:

  • at least one year of relevant full-time work experience undertaken in Australia for the Skills in Demand visa pathway;
  • at least two years of relevant full-time work experience for the subclass 494 regional visa pathway; or
  • the additional experience required under the relevant subclass 186 permanent residence pathway.

The applicant must also meet the ANZSCO skill level. Where permitted, relevant work experience may substitute for a formal qualification.

The precise rules vary between DAMAs and should be checked before a skills assessment, endorsement or visa application is lodged.

Driver’s Licence Requirements

Registration or licensing is required for Truck Driver (General).

Applicants may need to demonstrate that they hold, or can obtain, the appropriate Australian heavy vehicle driver’s licence for the proposed position.

The required licence class depends on the vehicle and duties. It may include:

  • Heavy Rigid licence;
  • Heavy Combination licence; or
  • Multi Combination licence.

Overseas driving experience or an overseas licence does not automatically provide authority to drive heavy vehicles in Australia. State and territory licensing requirements must be considered separately from the migration requirements.

Possible DAMA Concessions

Depending on the DAMA and the approved labour agreement, concessions may be available for:

  • English language ability;
  • age;
  • salary threshold;
  • work experience; and
  • permanent residence requirements.
