For many Australian visas, applicants must show proof of English language ability. This helps ensure new visa holders can settle successfully and actively contribute to the community.
The Department of Home Affairs only accepts results from approved English tests completed in secure testing centres. Computer-based or paper-based formats may be available, but online or at-home tests are not accepted.
From 7 August 2025, the list of English tests accepted for visa purposes was updated.

The level of English you need depends on the visa subclass (Functional, Vocational, Competent, Proficient, or Superior English). Each visa type specifies the minimum scores and evidence required.
